About to have a colostomy?

The NHS estimates that around 6,400 permanent colostomies are carried out each year in the UK. So, although it’s normal to feel anxious if you are about to have colostomy surgery and concerned about what life might be like afterwards, it is reassuring to know that you have almost certainly met an ostomate before but didn’t know it! What’s more, people with a colostomy lead normal lives. They have careers, they have partners and start families, they play sport and travel all over the world.

Our booklet ‘Living with a colostomy: Information for ostomates and their carers’ takes you from the early days after your operation, through to getting your life back on track. It includes advice on diet, sport and exercise.
