If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be living life with a stoma, I never would have believed you. But now, honestly, it’s the thing that gave me my life back and at the time I didn’t realise just how many choices I would have when it came to my stoma care.

Rectal discharge and mucus can be a normal part of life after stoma surgery, but it isn’t always something people are aware of or prepared for. Experiencing it for the first time can therefore come as a surprise and may feel uncomfortable or worrying, particularly if you’re unsure why it happens or how to manage it.

When I woke up with a stoma after my surgery in 2020, I felt completely overwhelmed. Overnight, my entire life had changed. I didn’t know anyone with a stoma, I had so many questions and I honestly wondered whether life would ever feel normal again.
