Meet Matt Turner, Team Colostomy UK PDRL Rules Captain

Meet Matt Turner, Team Colostomy UK PDRL Rules Captain

With our 2026 season about to kick off we shine the spotlight on the man whose job it is to lead us round the park this year.

What first inspired you to pull on a Colostomy UK rugby shirt and get involved with the team?
When Giovanni outlined the plans to start Team Colostomy UK many years ago, I jumped at the chance to help get it going. Being able to show that you can play a collision sport with a stoma opens doors and challenges the stigma around it.

Because we’re a team that doesn’t train together regularly, match days are extra special. What does a typical match day feel like from your point of view as captain?
There’s a buzz from the moment people wake up. The group chat is active, even from those who can’t make it, sending good luck messages. Everyone who pulls on the purple jersey wears it with pride because they know what it represents. It’s a really special thing to witness and be part of.

Team captains often set the tone , what’s more your style: rallying the group, cracking a joke to break the ice, or quietly making sure everyone feels included?
I’m usually the first to crack a joke or play the fool. For some, it’s their first game, and for others, there are nerves to settle. Keeping things calm helps everyone settle in. But when it’s go time, the focus shifts to player roles and game mentality.

Is there a particular moment from past matches or team socials that really sums up what this team is all about for you?
Honestly, anything memorable sticks with you forever! It’s just like every other team, but with the added pride of what we represent.

If someone living with a stoma was thinking about joining the team for the first time, what would you say to them?
This team has been there for me through injuries and even when I nearly left the sport. We’re a family, and we’d love to help more people realise what’s possible.

Fancy coming along to a game. See our updated fixture list here
