My name is Leslie Mello, and in February 2023 my life took an unexpected turn when I needed emergency colostomy surgery. Like many people in that position, I was frightened, overwhelmed, and unsure what the future would look like. Later that year, in December, I had a reversal.
In those early days after surgery, a little magazine dropped through my letterbox that changed everything for me. It was Tidings, Colostomy UK’s quarterly magazine. From the moment I opened it, I felt part of something bigger. The stories inside were filled with courage, honesty, and positivity. They gave me hope that, despite everything, I really could build a normal life again.
That sense of belonging and encouragement inspired me to give something back. Today, I’m proud to be a volunteer with Colostomy UK. I write for Tidings magazine, adding my voice to the community that once lifted me up. I also support people on the Colostomy UK helpline, especially those who are thinking about or going through reversal surgery.
Why do I do it? Because I know how powerful it is when someone says: “You’re not alone. I’ve been there too.” Sometimes, just being able to listen, share experiences, and offer reassurance can make all the difference to someone who’s struggling.
Volunteering has become a hugely rewarding part of my journey. It’s shown me that out of the most difficult times can come strength, connection, and the chance to help others find hope.
