Rectal discharge and mucus can be a normal part of life after stoma surgery, but it isn’t always something people are aware of or prepared for. Experiencing it for the first time can therefore come as a surprise and may feel uncomfortable or worrying, particularly if you’re unsure why it happens or how to manage it.

Join Di Davies, Senior Coloplast Nurse, for a practical and reassuring session exploring why mucus is produced, what you might experience from both your rectum and stoma, and practical ways to manage it. Di will also explain what’s normal, what changes to look out for, and when to seek further advice or support.

We’ll cover:

• Rectal mucus and discharge – what to expect
• Mucus from a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy

We’ll also be joined by someone with lived experience of rectal discharge and mucus, who will share their personal journey of managing it and what worked for them.

Who is it for?

Anyone living with a colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy who would like to better understand and manage mucus or rectal discharge. The session may also be helpful for anyone preparing for stoma surgery, as well as family members, carers and others supporting someone with a stoma.

About the Speaker

Di Davies RGN, ENB980, Senior Coloplast Nurse

Di has been a Clinical Nurse Specialist in stoma care for 28 years and a registered nurse for more than 40 years. She has worked with Coloplast for the past 12 years and currently supports people across the Midlands through community clinics and home visits, working in partnership with NHS teams to support their stoma care pathways.

Passionate about stoma care, Di has been published in the British Journal of Nursing and has presented at the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (ASCN) conference.
