Edward Mountain secures Stoma Friendly legacy on Stoma-Friendly Accessible Toilets

We are delighted to see significant progress in our campaign to make accessible toilets more suitable for people living with a stoma, following one of Edward Mountain MSP’s final contributions in the Scottish Parliament this session.

During the debate, Edward highlighted the real-world impact this campaign is already having. NHS Highland has made good progress in upgrading accessible toilets to be stoma-friendly, and the Scottish Parliament has also recently made improvements.

We were also pleased to hear Edward Mountain highlight the commitment already made by Morrisons to make all of its accessible toilets stoma-friendly across the UK.  In addition, Edward said that Tesco, Morrisons and Asda have all agreed to review their policies, with commitments to ensure store specifications comply with our recommendations from the start of the next financial year.

Speaking in the chamber, Edward said:

“As a result of my campaign, I am pleased to report that NHS Highland have made good progress in making their accessible toilet stoma friendly. I am pleased to report that the Parliament has, too… I was pleased to secure a commitment from Morrisons to immediately make all their accessible toilets stoma-friendly UK-wide.”

He also highlighted how simple these changes can be:

“All it requires is a mirror, a hook and a shelf.”

These are small, practical adjustments, but for people living with a stoma, they can make a huge difference to dignity, confidence and independence when away from home.

We are incredibly grateful to Edward Mountain for the determination and persistence he has shown in championing this issue, and we welcome the Minister’s recognition of the importance of improving support for people living with a stoma. Her commitment to continue backing this work in the next Parliament, if re-elected, is also very encouraging.

We know that stoma-friendly toilets are not a luxury – they are a necessity. This progress shows what can be achieved when campaigners, policymakers and businesses work together to make simple but meaningful changes.
