For Emily, life changed dramatically in 2017 when she received her stoma. The journey that followed wasn’t easy, but it gave her new perspective, strength, and compassion. Those lessons now guide her in everything she does — especially her role as a helpline volunteer.
Emily joined the helpline team in 2021, determined to be a listening ear for others facing similar challenges. “It’s about empathy rooted in lived experience,” she explains. Being able to reassure someone, share practical tips, or simply listen makes every call meaningful.
Art has also been an important part of Emily’s healing journey. Painting became her therapy — a way to express herself and find calm during difficult times. She has generously donated several of her artworks to the charity, which have gone on to raise funds through print sales. “It’s so rewarding to know my paintings can help in this way,” she says. And she encourages others to explore creativity too, highlighting Colostomy UK Active Ostomates sessions as a welcoming space to try something new.
Beyond the helpline, Emily runs a local stoma support group in Shropshire. She describes it as a joy to see people come together, share stories, and lift each other up. The laughter, kindness, and resilience of the members never fail to inspire her. To keep everyone informed and empowered, she also organises open days where manufacturers showcase the latest ostomy products — ensuring people have access to the knowledge and resources they need.
Despite her busy life — balancing full-time work, studying, and precious time outdoors with family and friends — Emily continues to give back in every way she can. For her, connection is everything. “Life with a stoma has taught me strength, compassion, and the importance of community,” she reflects. “I’m grateful every day to be part of something that supports and uplifts us all.”
