I was first diagnosed with cancer at 28, again at 31, and then thankfully went into remission. At 40, I faced another challenge when I was diagnosed with vaginal cancer, which resulted in me needing a stoma. After living with an ileostomy for 15 months, my reversal surgery was unsuccessful due to earlier radiotherapy damage, and I now have a permanent colostomy. I also live with just one functioning kidney following surgery-related complications.
But having a stoma has never stopped me from living life to the fullest. I’ve run half marathons, trekked to Everest Base Camp, climbed Kilimanjaro, cycled Coast to Coast, and even enjoy open-water swimming. Alongside those adventures, I’ve also built a new relationship and am excited to be getting married next year.
While I’ve certainly had my down days, I choose to live with positivity and determination. My active lifestyle often inspires people to reach out, asking me to support friends or family members who are adjusting to life with a stoma. When I saw the call for volunteers in Tidings, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to give back. I’ve now been volunteering for 18 months and dedicate as much time as I can to supporting others. Many people find it easier to talk to someone living with a stoma than to a nurse, and I find it incredibly rewarding to listen, reassure, and share my experiences.
Helping others see that life with a stoma can still be active, joyful, and fulfilling is one of the most meaningful parts of my journey.
