Rediscovering Strength and Confidence: My Active Ostomates Journey

16 November, 2025

Seven years ago, in my mid-sixties, I finally had the stoma surgery I’d needed for decades. A childbirth injury had lingered far too long in my life, and although the idea of surgery always felt daunting, eventually it became the right – and only – choice. Now in my early seventies, I can look back and say the decision changed far more than my health; it transformed my relationship with movement, confidence, and myself.

Before the Journey Began

If I’m being honest, physical activity and I were never close friends. I’ve had other health challenges, and I fully identified as a couch potato. The idea of fitness seemed distant, even unrealistic.

But over time, something shifted. My weight was creeping up, my dress size followed, and I felt increasingly frustrated with how inactive I had become. When Active Ostomates reached out to me by email, it felt like a nudge I desperately needed.

Finding My Place With Active Ostomates

I joined Chair Yoga with Lisa – my first real step into moving again. When I arrived, I was “creaking like the Titanic,” stiff and hesitant, worrying whether I’d even manage the basics. But Lisa taught with such warmth, humour, and gentleness that the fears slowly eased.

Her sessions were inclusive, achievable, and surprisingly uplifting. Those gentle exercises helped me build confidence in my body again. Now? I only squeak occasionally!

The Benefits I Never Expected

The impact of those classes went far beyond flexibility. I became more aware of my body and learned how to help myself when in pain. Because of that, I now rely on fewer painkillers and feel far more comfortable day-to-day.

Walking, stretching, and practising my class exercises have become part of my weekly rhythm. I started slowly – just gentle walks at first – but the progress has been remarkable. The stiffness that made me feel immobile has eased, replaced by a sense of possibility.

Being active has transformed my mental wellbeing too. I feel lighter, more confident, and more in control of my own health. The most rewarding part so far? Less pain, more mobility, and the simple joy of feeling flexible enough to do the things I love.

For Anyone Unsure About Getting Active…

I know how overwhelming it can feel. After surgery, or when you’ve been inactive for a long time, even thinking about exercise can be intimidating. But gentle classes like chair yoga are an incredible starting point – you’ll be surprised by what you can achieve.

Small steps matter. Simple stretches, a bit of self-massage, slow walks. I only wish I’d had the confidence to try sooner.

Looking Ahead

Moving into the future, my goal is simple: maintain my flexibility and mobility as I age. Active Ostomates has made a real and genuine difference in my physical and mental wellbeing, and I’m grateful to carry those tools forward.

And of course – a special shoutout to Lisa. Her kindness, humour, and guidance made all the difference.
