Air travel can feel daunting when you’re living with a stoma or any other disability, but it doesn’t have to be.
We have teamed up with ostomate Ifrah Mohamed to create a practical, empowering guide to help you travel with confidence, comfort, and dignity. Whether you’re heading abroad or flying closer to home, this resource is filled with tips on:
Booking assistance and planning ahead
Navigating security and scanners
Medical documentation to carry
What to pack in your hand luggage
Your rights at the airport and in-flight
Gaining confidence when flying with a stoma

Book assistance at least 48 hours in advance (especially if travelling with a wheelchair, medical equipment, or an assistance dog)
Contact your airline to request:
Proximity to toilets
Extra baggage for medical supplies
Help at check-in, security, and boarding
Visit the airport’s website to:
Locate accessible toilets (including stoma-friendly ones)
Find info on the assistance desk and accessible security lanes
Check the airport’s disability and assistance policies
Request a Sunflower Lanyard if you have a non-visible disability
Speak to your GP or stoma care nurse to ensure you’re medically ready
Let security know in advance about your stoma or device (if that gives you peace of mind)
Enough stoma management supplies for your journey (plus extra for emergencies)
Prescription medication in original packaging, with a doctor’s note
Extra clothes and wipes, just in case
Medical documentation, including:
Colostomy UK Travel Certificate or CAA Medical Device Awareness Card
Copy of prescriptions or access via the NHS app
Any letters from your doctor related to your condition
Assistive devices or liquids over 100ml (if needed check airport rules)
Let security staff know discreetly if you have a stoma, implant, or device
Request a private search with a same-gender officer if needed
Ask security to wear clean gloves if searching your hand luggage
Keep all medical items and documentation easily accessible
Arrive early to allow time for a smooth, unrushed experience
Extra hand luggage for medical equipment
Additional checked baggage allowance, if needed (inform airline in advance)
Ask to board early if that helps you feel more comfortable
Let cabin crew know if you need discreet support
Remember: stoma bags have filters, cabin pressure is usually not an issue
