Keith’s Journey: Finding Strength and Confidence Through Active Ostomates

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

My name is Keith Litherland, and I’m 69 years old. I retired in July 2021, and only a few months later, in December, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer following a colonoscopy.

Because of my existing health conditions—heart issues and diabetes—my surgeon referred me to both a heart consultant and an anaesthetist to confirm if I was fit for surgery. They agreed that surgery was the only option, as I wasn’t suitable for chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

In April 2022, I underwent my operation. While the cancer surgery itself went well, creating my stoma proved difficult. A second operation was needed to form a new stoma, and I was placed in an induced coma with complications that kept me in hospital for three months. I was also told my stoma would not be reversed.

It was a tough period, but it was the start of a new chapter in my life.

From Sports to Recovery

I’ve always had a love for sport. In my younger years, I played a variety of games, and while I later became more of a spectator, I still enjoyed golf and was a regular at the gym.

Before my operation, I was referred to a programme run by Burton Albion Football Club Foundation, in partnership with the NHS, designed to help cancer patients recover through exercise. I had an initial fitness assessment and, once I felt able, began working with a personal trainer. The sessions were free, and I could also attend independently to follow my programme.

That experience gave me the confidence to eventually join a local gym, which I now attend 4–5 times per week.

Discovering Active Ostomates

After recovering from surgery and taking some time to rest, I became aware of Colostomy UK in late 2023 and joined the charity as part of a bowel cancer group.

Through the charity’s newsletter, I learned about the Active Ostomates programme. I was particularly interested in something to improve my flexibility, so in February 2024, I signed up for my first online Pilates class with Heather.

Since then, I’ve attended every session and really enjoy them. The privacy of exercising from home, combined with the sense of being part of a group, has been fantastic. The focus on stretching and spinal health has been especially beneficial—I used to see a chiropractor, but since starting Pilates, I’ve not needed to.

Staying Active Today

Alongside Pilates, I still go to the gym regularly and play golf every few weeks with a society. Looking ahead, I’d like to try yoga, play more golf, and maybe even rejoin a club.

Getting active again wasn’t easy at first. After three months in hospital, I was very weak. Adjusting to retirement at the same time was also a challenge. But I was determined to pick up where I left off. The support of my local bowel cancer group has been invaluable too—it’s reassuring to be around people who truly understand what you’re going through.

The Impact on Mind and Body

Being active has made a big difference to my confidence and wellbeing. At first, I struggled with low confidence after the operation, but through the Ostomates classes and support groups, I’ve rebuilt that sense of self-belief.

Physically, I feel and look much better than I did after surgery. But beyond the physical benefits, the most rewarding part of this journey has been meeting so many inspirational people who’ve offered encouragement in countless ways.

Advice for Others

For anyone with a stoma who feels unsure about getting active, my advice is simple: there is nothing you can’t do. The stories of young people I’ve seen through Colostomy UK’s publications have been a real inspiration to me.

If you’re just starting out, the Ostomates online classes are an excellent first step. They give you privacy while still allowing you to feel part of a supportive community.

Looking Ahead with Positivity

The Active Ostomates programme has been a very positive experience for me. It’s helped me regain my strength, build confidence, and find enjoyment in exercise again.

As I look to the future, I’m excited to keep moving forward—whether that’s through yoga, golf, or continuing my Pilates practice.

Staying active has not only improved my physical health, but it’s also given me a renewed sense of optimism and connection.
