Thriving on the Frontline With a Stoma

When I was first told by medical professionals, “You can’t be a frontline police officer with a stoma,” it felt like a door slamming shut. Policing wasn’t just my career—it was my calling. To hear that it might be over because of surgery was crushing.

But then a simple question changed everything: “Why not?”

That one phrase sparked a chain of thoughts. Why not me? Why not find solutions? Why not challenge assumptions? Each answer led to another question, each question led to a solution, and soon I was back where I belonged—on the frontline.

That was nine years ago.

Since then, I’ve not only stayed in frontline policing, but I’ve also been promoted, appeared on television, and become an executive of the Disabled Police Association. I’ve taken on a lead role in driving change within policing, working to reshape the culture around disability and show that difference is not a barrier—it’s a strength.

None of this would have happened if I’d accepted “you can’t” as the final word. Instead, I chose to believe in “why not?” And that shift in mindset allowed me not only to return to the frontline, but to thrive—professionally and personally.

If there’s one thing I want to share, it’s this: the limits others place on you don’t have to define you. Sometimes, all it takes to break through is the courage to ask, “Why not?”
