David’s Story: Finding Freedom Through Sport After Surgery

25 September, 2025

Dave Moffat

For many people, a stoma can feel like the end of life as they knew it. But for David, it’s been the start of something new — a chance to get back to the things he loves and rediscover his independence.

“Having my stoma has meant I can get back to playing football, albeit walking football,” David says. “I play twice a week currently. A Monday evening and Thursday in a league. Both games are supposed to be non-contact, but sometimes players get carried away!”

Before surgery, David lived with Crohn’s Disease. The illness had left him too unwell to keep up with the sports and activities he once enjoyed. But since having a stoma, things have changed dramatically.

“My stoma has meant that I can get back to playing sport which I enjoy. I also run and go to the gym three times a week,” he explains.

And it’s not just about football and fitness. David’s stoma has given him the freedom to enjoy life’s simple pleasures again. He loves nothing more than heading out for long walks with his dog, exploring the Northumberland countryside or strolling along one of the many beautiful beaches on the coast.

David’s story is a reminder that a stoma doesn’t have to be the end of the activities you love. In fact, it can open the door to new opportunities and bring back the freedom to live life on your own terms.
