About stoma 66

Stoma 66 aimed to encourage those who have had stoma surgery, as well as their friends, family and carers to get active for 66 days and help us achieve a combined target of 66,000 km. Research shows that on average it takes 66 days to form a lasting habit. That means if we can get you active for 66 days then there’s a good chance you’ll carry on too! That’s why we’ve called our challenge: Stoma 66!

According to the NHS being active on a regular basis helps reduce improve both your mental and physical wellbeing. It can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke and cancer by up to 50%. Ostomates are no different and need exercise too!

The good news is that you don’t have to be afraid of getting active. There are plenty of things you can do whatever your age or fitness levels, either on your own or as part of a group or team. It could be gardening, walking the dog or even dancing!

While stoma 66 ended on 31st December 2019 there’s nothing to stop you still taking on the challenge for 66 days! If you want more information and advice on how to get active after stoma surgery, why not download our Active Ostomates booklet?
